Artist's Statement:
“I have always wanted to see further than my eyes can manage.” The Housemaid’s Daughter by Barbara Mutch Light is my focus. I am primarily a landscape painter. Working in oils, I enjoy the sensual quality of a brush stroke and feel drawn to the color harmonies found in nature. While I enjoy painting locally--from the Yolo Bypass to the wine country to the California Coast--I am always on the alert for new ideas. I prefer to start a painting with the sky; it sets the mood and is the part I most enjoy. Painting from an emotional reaction to a particular scene is both freeing and exciting. In “Touch of Spring”,I was drawn to the sense of expectation that comes with the dappled light and fresh colors of Spring. Around our valley location I have found that wonderful sense of scale and space; it is always inspirational with light that varies from a subtle glow to an enveloping warmth. Although I may paint from direct observation, I often paint from memories--either experienced or imagined. Shutting my eyes, I let the images appear, recalling the temperature, the scent of the air, and the emotions I felt when I did a quick sketch or took a photo. I am more interested in capturing a sense of the light and atmosphere than in the specifics of the site. I always want my paintings to be less about a precise location and more about an imaginary place I have travelled to inwardly; then the viewer can make it their own. |
